The short answer

A retractable screen lets the car go back in. A door-track system such as G-Trak attaches to the existing garage door rails and lists doors from 8 to 16 feet wide, while ceiling or wall-mounted screens such as the SportScreen Vanish LITE (from $2,299.99) anchor to solid structure. Measure to the lowest door track, check what the mount will hold, and do not hit until the screen is installed to the maker's instructions.

A garage has one big advantage for a golf simulator and one big problem. The space is large and the ceiling is often high enough, but the car has to come back in. A retractable screen is the usual answer. This guide explains the two ways one mounts in a garage, what clearance each needs and what it costs. It draws on retailer and maker pages and owner reports, not on installing one ourselves, so treat every number as something to confirm with the dealer.

Two ways to mount a retractable screen

On the garage door tracks. Shop Indoor Golf describes the G-Trak as a retractable screen system that attaches to the existing rails of a garage door. It is remote controlled and comes in several sizes. Rain or Shine Golf describes the same product differently, as a ceiling-mounted track system fixed to ceiling joists with manual retraction, so ask the dealer which applies to your door and opener. The Indoor Golf Outlet listing says it fits doors from 8 to 16 feet wide, gives a viewable screen height of 87 inches and a side and ceiling netting depth of 29 inches, and offers a wall-mount kit for installs where the tracks cannot be used (Shop Indoor Golf lists that kit at $199.99). The assembly manual has you measure from the bracket and mark the track on both sides, with an example that puts the screen 24 inches from the garage door. Older versions of the manual differ, so use the current one before drilling.

On the ceiling or wall. Systems such as the SportScreen Vanish series roll up toward the ceiling and lower to the floor. PlayBetter lists four standard sizes (Vanish 11, 13H, 16 and 16H), a 4:3 or 16:9 projection ratio, and brackets that mount to the wall or ceiling and ship with the screen. Retraction is by hand crank or by remote, takes under a minute and the page calls installation a two-person job that takes most of an afternoon. The SportScreen Vanish LITE is semi-retractable with two anchor points on one surface, from $2,299.99 for the 9 foot size with a hand crank.

Clearance: measure to the lowest thing

BenQ warns that overhead door tracks often sit 1 to 2 feet lower than the ceiling, so measure from the floor to the lowest point of the tracks, and note the opener rail and any lights too. Our garage ceiling guide walks through the measuring.

Golfer’s Authority gives these numbers for a retractable screen:

  • A floor area of about 10 feet 6 inches wide by 12 feet deep.
  • At least 18 inches from walls.
  • A ceiling of 9 to 10 feet for swing clearance (its FAQ says at least 10), with the roll mechanism using about 1 foot.
  • A distance of at least 10 feet from the golfer to the screen.
  • About 13 feet of width if you want to switch between players, including left-handers.

That page is not fully consistent, since it gives different ceiling figures in different places. Another listing, for a HomeCourse screen, says 8 feet of clearance is enough, and a different one says the screen must mount at least 8 feet 3 inches above the floor. Your swing decides: take a slow practice swing with your longest club at the hitting spot, add 6 to 9 inches, then compare.

For the bay itself, Shop Indoor Golf says a mat-and-net setup fits 10 feet wide by 10 feet long by 9 feet high, and a projector setup needs about 6 more feet of length.

Cost and what it adds

Golfer’s Authority says retractable screens cost about 20 to 30% more than fixed ones. Prices on retailer pages: the G-Trak is $1,599.99 for an 8 foot door with a 7 foot screen and rises with door width to $2,399.99 for a 16 foot door with a 14 foot screen. The HomeCourse Pro Retractable is $1,999 at Rain or Shine, which lists it for 9 to 10 foot ceilings with a deployed height of about 8.5 feet. The SportScreen Vanish LITE starts at $2,299.99, and the full Vanish starts at $2,999 with a hand crank and $3,999 powered. Compare that with a fixed Carl’s DIY enclosure kit from $999.95 or a bare impact screen from $179.95. None of these prices includes a launch monitor, projector or mat. Budget for mounting hardware, possible lumber reinforcement and professional installation. A powered version adds a motor and wiring. Golfer’s Authority puts motor noise under 45 decibels, and lasting only seconds.

For wear, the same page gives a rough life of 5,000 to 15,000 shots and says retractable screens are built mainly for indoor use. These figures are not independently tested. See the impact screen guide and the enclosure guide for what each style gives you.

Safety checks before the first swing

A retractable screen does not remove the risks of a garage simulator. Ball rebound, a ceiling strike and a stray shot are all possible, and no guide we found offers a standards-body rating for any of them. Do the following:

  1. Anchor to solid structure. Golfer’s Authority says mount to wood, concrete or metal beams, not drywall anchors. If you are unsure what the wall or ceiling holds, ask a qualified contractor.
  2. Leave electrical work to an electrician. A powered screen or a projector on the same circuit is not a do-it-yourself guess.
  3. Keep the swing circle clear. Carl’s Place recommends about 7 feet of clearance around the golfer. Keep cars, shelves and the opener out of it.
  4. Stand back. Golfer’s Authority recommends standing at least 10 feet from the screen.
  5. Cover hard edges. Carl’s Place says foam behind the screen edges slows shots that hit the frame. Cover tracks, brackets and pipes near the screen.
  6. Keep children and pets out of the garage while anyone is hitting.
  7. Check the door still works. Ask the dealer whether the door can be used with the screen mounted, and where the opener’s sensors sit.

Which one fits your garage

  • Door fits the listed range and the tracks are standard: a door-track system is worth pricing.
  • Door tracks are in the way or the ceiling is sloped: look at a wall or ceiling-mounted screen.
  • The car parks elsewhere: a fixed enclosure costs less. Our garage picks and the garage build guide cover that route too.

Mistakes to avoid

  1. Measuring to the ceiling and ignoring the tracks.
  2. Trusting one number. Ceiling advice for retractable screens runs from 8 feet to 10 feet or more.
  3. Forgetting the monitor’s depth. Shop Indoor Golf lists radar monitors at 16 to 19 feet of depth, so check the length of the bay, not just the height.
  4. Skipping the floor. Concrete is hard, so mat and foam matter.

Frequently asked questions

Can a retractable screen attach to the garage door tracks?

Some can. Shop Indoor Golf describes the G-Trak as attaching to the existing rails of a garage door, and its listing at Indoor Golf Outlet says it fits doors from 8 to 16 feet wide, with a wall-mount kit for installs where the tracks cannot be used. Confirm your door, track style and opener with the dealer.

How much ceiling height does a retractable screen need?

Sources vary. Golfer's Authority gives 9 to 10 feet for swing clearance and says the roll mechanism takes about 1 foot. One HomeCourse listing says 8 feet of clearance is enough, and another says the screen must mount at least 8 feet 3 inches above the floor. Your swing sets the real number, so measure to the lowest door track.

How much more does a retractable screen cost than a fixed one?

Golfer's Authority says about 20 to 30% more than fixed screens. Listings we found include the SportScreen Vanish LITE from $2,299.99, the G-Trak from $1,599.99 and a HomeCourse ProScreen 180 at $2,299.00. Mounting hardware, lumber reinforcement and installation can add to that.

Is a retractable screen a good idea if the ball rebounds?

No guide we found rates how well a retractable screen contains a ball, and that depends on the screen, how it is mounted and how far you stand from it, not on whether it retracts. Golfer's Authority recommends standing at least 10 feet from the screen. Keep children and pets out of the garage while anyone hits, and pad or cover hard objects near the screen.

Do I need a professional to install it?

The mount must hold on solid structure such as wood, concrete or metal beams, not drywall anchors, per Golfer's Authority. If you are unsure what is behind the wall or ceiling, ask a qualified contractor, and leave any electrical work, such as a powered motor, to a qualified electrician.
